Our Team

  • Dr Jake Biele

    CEO & Co-Founder

Jake is an award-winning entrepreneur, published scientist and keen photonics enthusiast. With a PhD in developing photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for quantum sensing, Jake has five years of experience in integrated photonics.

Jake also has experience working in an early-stage, deep-tech start-up where he helped commercialise PICs for medical applications.

  • Dr Dominic Sulway

    CTO & Co-Founder

Specialising in the ground up development of novel photonic systems at unconventional wavelengths, Dominic is an expert in photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design, simulation and characterisation.

Additionally, he has a wealth of experience in PIC post-processing and packaging, nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and thermo/electro-optics.

  • James Blatcher

    Integrated Photonics Engineer

A PhD student studying Integrated Photonics at the University of Bristol, James is an expert in the simulation, design and characterisation of integrated photonic devices, with a keen interest in quantum photonics.

James has joined the Light Trace team to help out with technical development and to gain exposure to life in a startup.

  • Dr Quinn Palmer

    Integrated Photonic Engineer

Having undertaken a PhD in integrated photonics for quantum optics as part of the world-renowned University of Bristol, Quinn brings deep insight and knowledge in designing, fabricating, and testing chips for quantum applications.

  • Hannah Vickers

    Business Administrator

Hannah brings strong expertise in business and financial administration. Additionally, she is implementing new systems, streamlining procedures, and developing comprehensive how-to guides to enhance workflow efficiency.

With a background in writing and journalism, Hannah also contributes her editorial skills to proofreading and refining content, ensuring clarity and professionalism across company communications.

Our Board

  • Dr Steve Kitson

    Chair

Steve started out as a physicist and has a background in optics, display technology and R&D. He has helped develop technology ranging from quantum optics to electronic paper, and his career has taken him from academia, to corporate R&D Labs, before co-founding and leading a tech start-up in Bristol.

Steve now uses that experience to help scientists and engineers on a similar journey, working to commercialise their technology. He’s currently the chair of 4 early-stage tech companies, including Light Trace Photonics, and an adviser and mentor to others.

  • Nick Sturge MBE

    Director

Nick, co-founder of Motion Media Technology, took the company public in 1996. He then led SETsquared Bristol to be ranked the world’s top university business incubator and founded Engine Shed, driving sustainable growth.

Now a portfolio NED and strategic adviser, Nick was awarded an MBE in 2019 for services to the digital economy. He currently serves as non-exec chair of Fusion Processing and techSPARK, a non-exec director of CFMS, and is a governor at Bath Spa University.
