Light Trace CEO wins Innovate UK’s Young Innovators Award 2022

January 2023, Bristol UK. Innovate UK’s Young Innovators Award recognises a diverse cohort of young entrepreneurs with exciting and impactful innovations from across the UK.

Science, Research and Innovation Minister George Freeman says:

“Innovation is about developing new and better ways of doing things - something young minds naturally do. Our Innovation Nation mission - and 50% increase in Innovate UK budget - is about investing in R&D in all parts of the UK to help drive economic investment and create exciting new career opportunities.”

Light Trace is proud to be recognised for its development of innovative chip-based components to help drive impact and growth in the UK photonics industry through enhanced R&D capabilities.

Photonic technologies have been highlighted by the government as crucial for tackling the greatest challenges of the 21st century such as climate change and the ageing population. Photonics is forecasted to be one of the top three most productive manufacturing sectors in the UK by 2035, however the current lack of key components within the industry is stifling innovation.

Light Trace Photonics is using photonic chips — microchips capable of manipulating light — to provide researchers with a host of new and enhanced component capabilities that will revolutionise innovation in the industry.

As part of this award, Light Trace will benefit from grant funding for product development, one-on-one business coaching and access to a UK-wide network of entrepreneurs.

Dr Jake Biele, Light Trace’s CEO, explains:

“I am delighted to have been selected as a Young Innovator by Innovate UK. This award recognises the hard work that has gone into making Light Trace a reality and will unlock resources to ensure we deliver on our vision and impact potential.”
